First Call for Nominations

Doctoral Consortium

Twenty-Third Annual International Conference on

Information Systems

December 12-15, 2002

Sponsored by Microsoft Research

The International Conference on Information Systems invites nominations for the Doctoral Consortium to be held near Barcelona, Spain.

The Consortium will take place at the Eden Roc Hotel which is situated on a little peninsula just outside Sant Feliu de Guixols, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Sant Feliu de Guixols is a small picturesque town situated on the northern Mediterranean coast of Spain, 120 km from Barcelona.

Consortium will begin Thursday (December 12th) evening and end on Sunday (December 15th) afternoon. The Consortium provides doctoral students working on their dissertation research with an opportunity to share research ideas and to consider issues related to academic and research careers in the Information Systems field.

Participation is by invitation only. The invitation will be based on one nomination only from each university  Ph.D. program. Complete and continuous participation by persons accepted to the consortium is mandatory. The ICIS 2002 meeting in Barcelona, Spain immediately follows the Consortium.

Eligibility

Students in Ph.D. programs in Information Systems who are conducting their dissertation projects are eligible for nomination. The ideal nominee should have completed course work and developed a dissertation proposal and should have at least six months work remaining (at the time of the Consortium) before completion.

Nomination Requirements

  • Students cannot apply directly but can only be nominated by their faculty.
  • There can only be one nominee per school, university, or institution.
  • Nominating schools must have a doctoral program and doctoral students in Information Systems.
  • The nomination should be in the form of a nomination letter from the nominating faculty and should certify that (a) the candidate is the sole nominee from the university/institution and (b) the candidate meets the eligibility criteria mentioned above.
  • Ideally the nominating faculty member would be the director of the IS doctoral program, the Dean of the College or Faculty, or the IS department’s chairperson. If these persons are not available, the person may be nominated by the candidate’s thesis advisor.
  • In the case more than one nominations are received from a university/institution, as we do not have the information to resolve the issue, both nominations are likely to be rejected.

Nomination Process

To nominate a student, the Director of the Ph.D. program in Information Systems (or other appropriate person, such as the Department Chairperson, the College Dean, or the student's advisor) must provide the following nomination package consisting of:

  1. A completed Nomination Letter together with
  2. A Proposal Paper prepared by the doctoral student summarizing the dissertation research.

Both these materials should be submitted together as a single package and received no later than midnight, May 31 (Greenwich meantime).  Incomplete nomination packages will not be accepted. Please submit the materials between May 15th and May 31st 2002. Submissions before May 15th  will not be accepted. The address of contact person for submission and the submission process will be announced and posted on the ICIS 2002 web-site by April 30th.

Applications arriving after this date will not be considered. All nominations will be acknowledged. Nominees who do not receive confirmation are asked to notify the above person within 72 hours after June 2, 2002.

  • Selection is competitive based on the quality of the dissertation research, the contribution the student may make to the Consortium, and the potential benefit of the Consortium to the student's project.  This assessment will be based upon a review of the Proposal Paper prepared by the doctoral student summarizing her or his dissertation research
  • The above review is for selection purposes only. There is no expectation that the review will provide feedback for improvement to those candidates not invited to the consortium.
  • The Consortium will include a balance of students representing diverse research topics, methods, schools, and cultures.
  • Admission is limited to 40 students. The language for the Consortium is English. All submitted materials must be in English. Students must have sufficient proficiency in English to participate in the scientific discussions.
  • Students must also have access to Web (or some other means of synchronous communication) prior to their arrival at the consortium.
  • Students must commit to the entire duration of the consortium.
