Modernism Barcelona City Tour

Visiting Passeig de Gracia where the three main exponents of the movement compete on one of its blocks : Gaudí with the Casa Batlló, Domènech i Montaner, with the Casa Lleó Morera; and Puig i Cadafalch with the Casa Ametller. The route goes on through the Eixample, with its shops and stores is also a ideal area for shopping, revealing Modernism in all its splendour, as well as Gaudi's supremacy. La Pedrera; like a house under the sea, topped by stone warriors, also can be admired at the Passeig de gracia. The Sagrada Familia church, still unfinished, with its towers pointing skywards, is probably the most impressive work of Gaudí. The Güell Park, declared a treasure of world culture by UNESCO.

TUESDAY 17TH DECEMBER

Sitges

Sitges lies only 30 km south Barcelona and it is a jewel along the varied coastline of Barcelona, gleaming white by the blue sea. This old fishermen village becomes a holiday resort for the Barcelona society in the latest century, and when the 60' tourism boom provided great amounts of money to expand this industry along the Mediterranean coast, this expansion did not reach Sitges and thus it has kept its charm through.

Apart of the wonderful beach with its golden sand and the romantic old village quarter, Sitges also offers the Cau Ferrat House  which is a very interesting old house where the painter Santiago Rusiñol lived. There you can find a great collection of paintings and have a marvellous view of the Mediterranean sea. Across the street from the museums, the stately Maricel Palace, built in 1910 for American millionaire Charles Deering, wows visitors with its sumptuous halls and rich gardens.

Inside the old quarter with its narrow streets you can find the atmosphere of a typical village; calm and balanced. Then when the sun seems to enchant the houses, the beach and the sea, night life awakes in the little pubs and restaurants where there is amusement for everyone.

TUESDAY 17TH DECEMBER

Girona & Dali Museum

100 kilometres away from Barcelona there's the ancient walled town of Girona, high above the Onyar river. Centre point of the old town is the Cathedral, a mighty Gothic building approached by a magnificent seventeenth century flight of Baroque steps, and  its tremendous single-naved vault with a span of 22m, the largest in the world.

The well-preserved Banys Arabs built by Moorish craftsmen in the thirteenth century, long after the Moor's occupation of Girona had ended, are also well worth a look, as is the surviving portion of the Jewish quarter, el call.

Near Girona there is Figueres, a place that would pass almost unnoticed, however, were it not for the most visited museum in Spain after the Prado: the Museu Dali . Dali was born in Figueres and died there on 1989; his embalmed body now lies in a glass case inside the museum. Installed by the artist in a building as surreal as the exhibits, the Museu Dalí is a treat, appealing to everyone's innate love of fantasy, absurdity and participation.
