Manuel Castells is Senior Professor at the Internet Inter-disciplinary Institute (IN3), Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Barcelona. He has also been Professor of Sociology and Professor of Planning at the University of California
at Berkeley, and Professor of Sociology at the Ecole des Hautes
Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.
Professor Castells is the author of 23 books, including the trilogy Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture (Blackwell,1996-2000), The
Internet Galaxy (Oxford University Press, 2001), and The
Information Society and the Welfare State: The Finnish Model (with
Pekka Himanen; Oxford University Press, 2002). Among other appointments, Professor Castells has
been a member of the European Commission’s High Level
Expert Group on the Information Society and of the United
Nations’ Secretary General Advisory Council on Information
Technology and Global Development. He is also codirector of the
Project Internet Catalonia, a major research program currently
being conducted
at the IN3.

John L. Hilley was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASDAQ International, Inc., in July 1999. In
this capacity, Hilley leads all international efforts on
behalf of the company including the direction of NASDAQ’s markets
in Europe and Japan, as well as forging strategic
partnerships with foreign markets.
Prior to joining NASDAQ, Hilley served at the White House as Senior Advisor to the President of the United States.
Joining the Administration in February 1996, he advised the President on
the full range of national policy issues and served as his
chief representative to the United States Congress. Hilley oversaw and managed the enactment of all major legislation in 1996
and 1997, and was the Administration’s key strategist and
negotiator for the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and the Taxpayer Relief Act
of 1997.
Earlier, Hilley held a number of senior positions in the United States Senate, including Chief Counsel for Senate
Democratic Leader Tom Daschle; Chief of Staff for then Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell; and Staff Director for the
Senate Budget Committee under Chairman Jim Sasser.
Prior to coming to Washington, Hilley was a tenured Professor of
Economics at Lehigh University. Hilley holds a B.A., M.A. and
Ph.D.
in Economics from Princeton University.
